Courses We Offer
As with all courses delivered by Handle with Care the emphasis is on ensuring relevance for all participants to enable them to share their experiences. All our courses are suitable for staff working in care homes or clients own homes.

Sharing is done in a gentle and friendly way to assist everyone to feel comfortable. Some exercises are carried out to highlight key elements to be discussed. Not everyone will be required to write unless otherwise stated.

Any two 3 hour courses can be combined to make 1 full day course.

Course Title: Course Details:
Accredited Moving & Handling Course This course will look at:

• The Manual Handling Regulations (1992 Updated 2004)
• Person centered approach to practice, underpinned by ergonomics
• Demonstration and practice of Moving & Handling techniques
• Trouble shooting of learners™ experiences

This course is accredited by the Charted Institute of Environmental
Health and involves a written test at the end

The course lasts for 6 hours .The course may also be split into two
sessions of 3 hours to be carried out on separate days.

An extra charge of £8.95 + VAT Per Person for accreditation will be made.
 
 
Basic Moving & Handling Course This course will look at:

• The Manual Handling Regulations (1992 Updated 2004)
• Person centered approach to practice, underpinned by ergonomics
• Demonstration and practice of Moving & Handling techniques
• Trouble shooting of learners™ experiences

The course lasts for 6 hours .The course may also be split into two
sessions of 3 hours to be carried out on separate days.
 
 
Changes due to Age This course will look at:

• Physical changes due to age both normal and abnormal
• Impact of aging on the individual and family
• Changes in behaviour as a result of aging both normal and abnormal
• Accommodating and reacting to the changes of aging
• Principles of practice from and by course members

The course lasts for 3 to 5 hours depending on time available and the nature
of the work environment. Two sessions of 3 hours may be carried out on the same
day to reach different members of staff (i.e. night staff). The course may be
run in conjunction with other courses on the same day such as grief and loss.
 
 
Common Conditions of the Elderly This course covers:

• Discussion about each system of the body and common conditions which affect them,
related to the client group
• Physical and mental changes affecting the client
• Roles and responsibilities of staff caring for clients

Examples of the conditions that can be covered in this course are: - heart failure,
depression, dementia, chest conditions,musculo-skeletal changes,
and if relevant a section on cancer
 
 
Communication This course will look at:

• Effective communication
• Barriers to effective communication
• Verbal / non-verbal communication
• Legal and professional aspects of communication
• Communication and quality of life / care

The course lasts for 3 to 5 hours depending on time available and the nature of
the work environment. Two sessions of 3 hours may be carried out on the same
day to reach different members of staff (i.e. night staff). The course may
be run in conjunction with other courses on the same day such as sensory loss in old age.
 
 
Control and prevention of Infection This course will look at:

• Signs and symptoms of infection in self and others
• Identifying possible sources of infection (risk assessment)
• Causes of the spread of infection
• Personal good practices preventing the spread of infection
• Safety in the disposal of waste (including clinical waste)
• Hygiene and infection control procedures

The course lasts for 3 to 5 hours depending on the nature of the work environment.
Two sessions of 3 hours may be carried out on the same day to accommodate different
members of staff (i.e. night staff). The course may be run in conjunction with other
courses on the same day. This course undertakes to address the standards laid out in
the Health and Social Care S/NVQ Level 2 - primarily HSC units 22 and 246 and
related to HSC units 23, 24, 29, 230, 240, and Level 3 - primarily HSC units 32
and related to 33, 35, 3117.This course is run inline with the Induction Standards.
 
 
Caring for People with Dementia This course will look at:

• Person Centred Approach to Dementia
• Nature and causes of Dementia
• Coping with Dementia
• Treatment and interventions in caring for people with dementia

The course lasts for 3 to 5 hours depending on time available and the nature
of the work environment. Two sessions of 3 hours may be carried out on the
same day to reach different members of staff (i.e. night staff). The course
may be run in conjunction with other courses on the same day such as
depression in the older person.
 
 
Accredited Emergency First Aid at work course From the 1st October 2009 the HSE created a new Emergency First Aid at Work qualification(EFAW).
This one day course has been developed in order to comply with employers' responsibilities in line with the new HSE Risk Assessment of First Aid needs.
The new EFAW qualification must be run through an awarding body accredited by the QCA. All successful students will be issued with a new Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate which lasts for a period of 3 years, along with a wallet sized plastic card detailing their qualifications.

Induction to Care This 3 day course covers six main subjects,
First Aid
Health and Safety,
Communicatiuon,
Record Keeping,
Personal Care,
Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults.
The induction course workis in close association with the Skills for Care induction standards and the new Qualifiction and Credit Framework (QCF) to which homes will be required to conform each trainee will receive a log book which they will fill in during and after the course along with extensive learning materials. This log book can also be clamed towards the NVQ Level 2.
 
 
Trainers Course in Moving and Handling This 20 hour course is held over 4 full days, designed to develop in course-members, (principally trained nurses) techniques to train others in Safe Moving and Handling practices. A comprehensive Trainers File containing all the material covered by the course, including risk assessment, is supplied to each course member. A short exam can be taken at the end of the course for the Moving and Handling to be accredited from CIEH. This will be at no extra cost but does need to be ordered at the beginning of the course.
 
 
Accredited Health and Safety for Carers Level 1 This qualification focuses on the importance of maintaining health and Safety in the care sector. An understanding of the following will be gained:
How to contribute to safely Moving and Handling individuals, Health and Safety in daily living, the importance of the maintenence of a safe and clean environment in a variety of settings and the necessity to follow company Health and Safety rules and procedures.

Depression in Older People This course is designed to introduce the course participant to the principles of caring for elderly clients who suffer from, or may be susceptible to, depression. It is appropriate for all staff involved in the Care of the Elderly.

• To introduce the course participant to the concept of depression.
• To determine the nature of depression, and the ways in which it may affect the elderly client.
• To discuss various treatments available for depression.
• To encourage course members to share experiences and reflect on practice.
